AM Warkup's letterTo achieve a consumption of 7-8 kg per day, it is crucial to increase feeding frequency. The strategy should be to feed the lactating sow smaller meals, and not necessarily of equal quantities, throughout the day. Even better is to provide larger amounts of feed either early in the morning or late at night, when the environment is cooler.
This study suggests that eating at least 3 daily meals may improve the energy status of the sow during farrowing, reduce the overall farrowing duration, and thereby reduce the number of stillborn piglets. Results indicate that sows might benefit from receiving up to as much as 8 daily meals shortly before farrowing.
The findings of the study, generated using GESTAL feeders, from the ALDO farm were conclusive: maximizing feed intake during lactation is very important. Research has shown us that if sows lose too much weight during this period, there is a negative effect on subsequent reproductive performance. Read the results.
